QR codes are everywhere, from restaurant menus to billboard advertisements. However, not all QR codes are created equal. To ensure your QR codes are effective and scannable, follow these best practices.

1. Maintain High Contrast

The most important rule of QR code design is contrast. Always ensure there is a stark difference between the foreground (the code) and the background. The classic black on white is the safest bet, but you can use colors as long as the contrast ratio is sufficient.

2. Size Matters

Don't make your QR code too small. For print materials, the minimum recommended size is 2x2 cm (0.8x0.8 inches). If the code is placed further away (like on a billboard), it needs to be significantly larger.

3. Error Correction Level

If you plan to add a logo to the center of your QR code, ensure you use a high error correction level (Level H or Q). This allows the code to remain readable even when part of it is covered or damaged.

4. Leave a Quiet Zone

QR codes require a "quiet zone"—a margin of white space around the code. This helps scanners distinguish the code from its surroundings. Never print text or images directly touching the edge of the QR code.
